The Croatian Academic Sports Federation and the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, with the support of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Croatian Hypertension League, the University of Zagreb, the European University Sports Association (EUSA), and other academic and non-academic partners, hosted the first “4 Healthy Academic Society” conference.
The conference was held on June 8th and 9th as part of the UniSport Finals national student competition and marked a significant step towards creating a healthier and more active academic environment that will benefit the physical and mental health of students, academics, and professionals.
It was a platform for presenting numerous scientific presentations and papers, as well as important research results, exchanging knowledge, and creating new acquaintances and connections. By discussing topics from the fields of physical education, health and exercise, sports management, dual careers, and the position of students, a significant first step was taken towards creating a better academic society.
The opening remarks at the conference were given by Haris Pavletić, President of the Croatian Academic Sports Federation and First Vice President of the European University Sports Association, and Adam Roczek, President of EUSA.
Both speakers emphasized the importance of sport, physical activity, and management in sports organizations, and specifically thanked all the speakers, scientists, professors, and officials present for their great work in university sports and beyond.
Speakers from various fields had a lot of useful things to say, and among others, we would like to highlight the keynote speakers:
- Prof. Academician Bojan Jelaković, who presented the results of his research on the topic “The Importance of Physical Activity in Modern Society”, as well as the importance of nutrition and dietary habits.
- Prof. Boštjan Šimunič, with a presentation on the topic “Physical Activity and Sedentary Lifestyle”.
- Prof. Mojca Doupona, who gave a detailed presentation “From EU Guidelines on Dual Careers to Useful Practical Tools for Student Athletes”.
- EUSA Treasurer Prof. Francis Cirianni, on the topic of “University Sport: Development and New Perspectives”. Mr. Cirianni gave examples of best practices in organizing university sports events, including examples of EUSA Championships, EUGs, and the ESOM project.
The “4 Healthy Academic Society” conference concluded with a Round Table and panel discussion of scientists dealing with problems and potential improvements related to the position of student athletes, drawing attention to the impact of the quality of physical education, extracurricular sports activities, and academic sports on a healthier academic environment.
The event would not have been possible without the partnership of the academic community, the sports and health sector, and the support of the Enhancing Sport Organisations and Management (ESOM) project, co-funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ program. A big thank you goes to the entire organizing committee, led by President Assoc. Prof. Sanja Ćurković, President of HASS Dr. Haris Pavletić, and Doc. Dr. Sc. Željko Jovanović.
